Many of us have seen Lemon and Chilies hanging with a thread. It is a strong belief that hanging lemon and chilies in front of shops, homes, or vehicles will keep us away from Witchcraft.
Why do people hang lemon and chilies at the entrance of homes and shops?
Long long ago, when science and technology were not so advanced to make any pesticide for mosquitos and flies. So, our ancestors of India invented an insecticide from lemon, chilies, and cotton thread. They used this setup to repel mosquitoes and flies.
Lemon and chilies are rich in Vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid and ascorbate). When lemon and chilies are pierced by a cotton thread, the acid from the lemon is absorbed by the thread. The smell of it gets spread in the air and helps to repel mosquitoes and flies (works as an insecticide). On the other hand, chili works as a germ-killer when hung outside.
Why do people hang lemon and chilies in vehicles?
As stated above technology was not so advanced. Mostly the paths traveled by the people were forested and consists of mud and trees. While traveling through these types of areas, there is the possibility of getting bites of snakes and other poisonous creatures. In these types of situations, lemon and chilies can tell whether the creature which bit was poisonous or not.
Whenever a person gets a bite the taste buds of the person fail as his nerves are paralyzed. If the taste buds feel the sour or spicy taste of lemon and chili that means the bite was not poisonous but if the taste buds do not sense the contrast in taste so this indicates that the bite was poisonous which helps the person knowing if he/she needs immediate medication or not.
