Why Hindus Don't Cut Hair/Nails On Saturday?

In the olden times, the barber used to do hair, nail cutting, and shaving every day. They had no weekly off.

LISTEN IN HINDI

"Do not cut your hair on Saturdays!". We often listen to these types of commands from our elders, especially from our parents and grandparents. They do not allow us to do so. They also afraid of doing so because of our religious teachers. We are also not allowed to shave and cut our nails on this day.

Did you realize that all these things are done in one shop? Yes, and that is "The Barber's Shop" The reason for this old superstition is linked with the Barbers. But first, let's see what reason does our elders give when asked.

Belief

Our elders and religious teachers used to give the reason that it brings bad luck as it brings anger of Planet Shani (Saturn) upon us. We will lose money and peace of mind in our life.

It's a good reason for the people who believe in Astrology and blindly trust religious teachers. But, the people who only trust logic and not satisfy with this belief. Scroll down...

Reason

  • In the olden times, the barber used to do hair, nail cutting, and shaving every day. They had no weekly off. So, they used to have weekly off on Saturday. Now, the question arises, "Why do they not have off on Sunday like everyone?". Everyone except the barber had off on Sunday. So, it is the only day on which everyone is free from their daily work.

Overall, there used to be only one or two barbers in a village. Therefore, on Sunday, the workload would be supreme. So, they were able to relax and prepare themselves for the remaining days of the week.

  • Another possible reason in Astrology could be, the nails and hairs grow daily. Therefore, they are considered living parts of our bodies. Although, modern science does not think so. Hence, when we cut a living part of our body, it is a sin (an immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law), and that is why Lord Shani gets annoyed with the person who does so.

This belief is not only for Saturday but also for Tuesday, Thursday, and other favorable days like Ekadashi, Chaturthi, and some important festivals.

There could be many other reasons behind it. We cannot conclude anything certainly today. I have seen many people cutting their hair and/or nails on Saturday. Nothing dreadful happens in their lives. Many businessmen and officials have to shave every day. Still, they are earning massively and living a good life. Obstacles will always be there in our days whether you cut your hair on Saturday or not. It is our attitude that matters.

Ancient Hindus had good awareness about planets and their effects on us. So, we can not rule out the probability that there could be some point in this thing. Therefore according to me, we should take careful access toward this thing. If possible, try to avoid cutting hair/nails on Saturdays, but if there is necessary work when you have to cut your hair/nails, like an interview or business meeting, etc., we should go ahead with it.
