Religious comments
Every religion has its own comment on this topic. Whether it is Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, or Christian.
Hindus comments
If you are Hindu, your elders, especially grandparents, tell you not to eat non-vegetarian food on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Have to ever think about why do they suggest so?
Amongst these, the reason for not eating meat on some particular days, excluding weekly, days is purely religious.
The killing of animals is considered a crime in Hinduism. So, people avoid eating meat at least on those auspicious days to maintain the sacredness (the quality of being considered holy and deserving respect) of that particular day.
The logic behind not having meat on days, including Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, is that as human beings, we require only some amount of meat to fulfill requirements of our bodies such as vitamin B12, iron, and other vital nutrients. But a human being basically is also like an animal.
We can get used to eating meat. As we all know that eating more meat is unhealthy.
It can cause the following diseases:
- Kidney stones
- Colon cancer
- Blood pressure
- Heart attack
- Piles, etc.
Then also, people cannot refrain from eating flesh. Therefore, Hinduism has placed some restrictions by assigning the days to a particular diet. Some are:
- Monday is dedicated to Lord Shiva
- Tuesday to Lord Hanuman
- Thursday to Lord Dattatreya and Lord Saibaba
- Saturday to Lord Hanuman, Lord Venkateswara
And yes, in some regions of India, even Wednesday and Friday are also dedicated to some lords. But, I am sure they left someday alone and do not dedicate to any god😂😂.
In this way, people have been indicated some religious restrictions as most Hindus are religious, they obey this rule. Following this, they restrict Non-vegetarianism in their diet, which is good for their health.
- Tuesday: Do not eat non-veg on Tuesday because Tuesday is the day of Pawan Putra Hanuman. It is unauspicious to take nonveg.
- Thursday: It is also called Guruvar in Hindi. This is the day of Lord Guru Brihaspati, so you should not eat too. Some people also consider it to be the day of Sai Baba. Therefore, they do not eat meat.
- Saturday: Some people say that it is the day of Lord Venkateswara. Therefore, they do not eat meat.
There are some other reasons
- Some people do not eat meat in Navratri, which happens twice a year. Though Bengalis do eat meat during Durga Pooja
- Some don’t eat meat on Friday. Too saying Goddess Lakshmi or Goddess Santoshi’s fast.
Islams comment
Islam has its origins in regions of the world that were loaded with deserts and lacking vegetation. Therefore, people in those areas had to depend on animals for food.
So, after ages and ages of non-vegetarianism, most of them remained non-vegetarian even after they went out. So, I guess there is nothing between being vegetarian and religion.
There are vegetarian Muslims. A Muslim friend of mine turned vegetarian because he could not tolerate the animal slaughter(
to kill an animal, usually for food)!
I see no reason why it should affect their lifestyle or health. We, vegetarians, are sufficiently healthy and share a healthy lifestyle.
Scientific comments
Science never trusts anyone without proof. That is why its reason is acceptable to everyone.
As always, science has its own reasons for this topic based on several pieces of research. But, unlike different religions, it does not in favor or against eating Non-veg.
So, it explains both advantages and disadvantages of eating Non-veg. Let us check out both one by one.
Source of Iron
You must have heard from doctors, teachers, etc. That iron is essential for our body. But how?
Iron is a mineral that the body requires for growth and development. Our body uses iron to make hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that transfers oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body, and myoglobin, a protein that provides oxygen to muscles. Our body also requires iron to create some hormones.
Iron in Chicken (Non-Veg)
Lack of iron in our body can cause Iron Deficiency Anemia. Symptoms of this disease are as follows:
- Extreme tired
- Weakness
- Pale (light) skin
- Chest pain
- Fast heartbeat
- Shortness of breath
- Headache, dizziness, or lightheadedness
- Cold hands and feet
- Inflammation or soreness of your tongue
- Brittle nails
- Poor appetite (a person who desires to eat food), especially in infants and children with iron deficiency anemia
If you have any symptoms listed above then, you are suffering from Iron Deficiency Anemia.
You can cure yourself by taking the proper amount of iron required by your body. The amount of iron recommended by different people is categorized below.
Source of Protein
Proteins are very essential nutrients for the human body. They are also known as building blocks of our body.
When we eat protein, our body breaks these large molecules of protein down into smaller units. These units are called amino acids.
These amino acids or building blocks are used for many essential functions in the body, including growth and repair of muscle, connective tissue, and skin.
In moderate cases of protein deficiency, someone might experience:
- An increased appetite for protein as the body tries to excite protein intake
- Weakness
- Tiredness
Symptoms of a common cause of protein deficiency include:
- Muscle wasting, also known as muscle atrophy
- Thinning hair
- Brittle nails
- Flaky skin
Critical protein deficiency can cause severe health problems, like:
- Stomach bloating
- Liver failure
- Skin that bursts open
- Stunted growth
- Porous bones that are weak and thin
If you have any symptoms listed above, you should improve the quantity of protein in your diet.
You can check your protein requirement from the table given below:
Protein from Non-Veg
Non-Veg is very rich in protein. This is the reason why most of the sportspersons eat Non-Veg regularly. I am also in sport and have a Non-Veg meal twice a week.
Some of the animal foods rich in protein are listed below:
Meat and egg
Fish
Conclusion
Every religion tries to make its own reason without any sense and directly or indirectly connects it with its god.
There are many advantages as well as disadvantages of eating Non-Veg. Today, I have explained about advantages. I will come on the disadvantages too on next Tuesday.
